IE2 three-phase motors are a high-technology design developed for general applications. Compared with a standard efficiency motor, efficiency increases by roughly 5–10% depending on the type: a saving that becomes significant when there are many motors or high power ratings.

Standard IEC 60034-30-1 defines four classes: IE1 standard efficiency, IE2 high efficiency, IE3 premium efficiency, IE4 super premium efficiency.
Since 1 July 2021, EU Regulation 2019/1781 requires at least efficiency class IE3 in Europe for three-phase asynchronous motors with 2, 4, 6 and 8 poles from 0.75 to 1000 kW, and at least IE2 from 0.12 to 0.75 kW. Since 1 July 2023, 2-, 4- and 6-pole motors from 75 to 200 kW must be class IE4 (brake motors and motors for explosive atmospheres excluded).
